The Lydian Quartet gave the premiere of Andrew Waggoner’s Fifth Quartet, February 5th, 2022 at Brandeis University, where the quartet is in residence. The two-movement work, a 2018 Fromm Foundation commission for the Lydian, is an extended rumination on the worlds-within-worlds that open to us in the act of remembering, and in the still-evolving relationships we cherish with those we’ve lost. The movements, Every Sentient Being and Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness, are essentially parallel universes, with the second revealing the expanses lying hidden in the first. The Lydian performed the quartet again at Duke University’s Ciompi Presents summer series on June 2nd.
